獸醫的一般職責包括寵物診症、保健和絕育，還有動物防疫。其實，獸醫的工作可以有不同類型，例如，在政府漁護署工作的獸醫負責家禽、肉食動物和出入口動物檢查及病毒檢測。
在農場和海洋公園，獸醫需要照顧包括爬蟲類等不同種類動物的健康。而馬會的獸醫需要照顧比賽及繁殖等用途馬匹的健康。
若想成為獸醫，學生首先要喜愛動物，希望維護動物的健康。假如同學將來打算在動物診所工作，更需注重跟人溝通的技巧，以及有探究精神。因為寵物不懂與人對話，所以獸醫需耐心地從動物主人口中了解牠們的健康情況。另一方面，如果要醫治流浪動物或被遺棄寵物，需花更多時間去抽絲剝繭，然後斷症。
根據獸醫管理局名冊，目前本港有逾700名獸醫。
職責
香港本地愈來愈多人飼養寵物，對獸醫師的需求亦隨之增多，香港暫時只有香港城市大學提供獸醫學位課程，有興趣的畢業生亦可到海外地區進修，以下是獸醫師的主要工作：
- 為動物進行檢查、疾病預防、診斷和治療
- 為動物進行化驗，並對檢查報告和結果作出分析
- 使用醫療設備和藥物等治療動物的疾病
- 觀察動物病情變化，採取相應的治療措施
- 為動物進行防疫工作
入職條件
- 具備大學獸醫學士學位（可到澳洲、英國、加拿大等地方的認可院校修讀課程）
- 獲得《獸醫註冊條例》註冊為獸醫的資格
行業前景
香港近年飼養寵物的人數大增，屋苑放寬飼養寵物的條件，許多動物診所新開業，預計將來會需要更多獸醫。另外，獸醫正朝着專科方向發展，例如分動物骨科、皮膚科、心臟科和眼科等。
雖然近年香港的動物主人對動物醫療的認識及要求亦與日俱增，但香港政府表示香港開辦的獸醫學院的規模無須太大，只需要提供少量獸醫專業培訓及宜重視科研工作。要達致最好的動物醫療服務，必須靠獸醫和動物主人的有效互動。選擇獸醫時，獸醫列出的專業資歷往往是動物主人最注重的一環。
香港獸醫管理局承認的海外資格包括熱門的澳洲「八大」獸醫資歷。在外地完成獸醫課程及考試及格後，便可以在港註冊執業，如果要成為專科獸醫，則需要累積獸醫工作經驗，進修和通過評核。

Qualifications required for registration5.為施行該條例第9(1)(a)條，除另有訂明的條件外，任何人士如可令管理局信納以下其中一項，則符合資格註冊為獸醫：

All Vets in the UK must be a member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS). To become a member you must complete a five-year degree course at one of these universities: The Royal Veterinary College, London, Bristol, Cambridge (six years), Surrey, Liverpool, Nottingham, Edinburgh or Glasgow.
There are eight veterinary schools in the UK which award degrees that have been approved by the RCVS:
To obtain a doctor of veterinary medicine (DVM) degree, a minimum of six years of university education is required: two years of pre-veterinary study at a regular university followed by four years of courses in veterinary medicine at one of the five Canadian veterinary colleges (five years in the province of Quebec). Some of the colleges are adjusting their pre-veterinary requirements and introducing some curriculum changes to reflect the changing face of the profession.
The Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) is the national professional association which governs and upholds the medical and professional standards of working veterinarians. It also oversees the Canadian Veterinary Reserve, which is a collection of veterinarians and health technologists who can be called upon to act in declared emergencies or relief efforts. All veterinary students are automatically members of the CVMA.

Becoming a Veterinarian in Australia
The most basic requirement to become a vet in Australia is to get a bachelor’s degree in veterinary science. An alternative option is to opt for another medical-related or science undergraduate course, and then a doctoral degree in veterinary science.
After you complete your studies, you need to register with the Veterinary Practitioners Registration Board or the Veterinary Surgeons Board in your state. Registration with the board permits you to practise veterinary medicine in that particular state.
