職業治療師藉著使用「有目的性的活動」來治療或協助生理、心理、發展障礙或社會功能上有障礙及需要的人，使他們能獲得最大的生活獨立性。
除了在醫院、診所，如：復健科、精神科、骨科、外科、神經內科等提供民眾治療外，職能治療所、社區精神復健機構、長者機構、特殊教育學校、等亦可見職能治療師服務。
職業治療師的主要職責是？
不少人以為「職業治療」中的「職業」，純粹與工作有關；其實，一個人每日會花時間去做的，也是「職業」，例如，小朋友的「職業」是學生和遊戲，成年人的「職業」是從事某工作崗位，長者的「職業」則可能是湊孫、休閒等。身為職業治療師，就是要為那些不能應付生活上不同「職業」的人，評估病況，提供治療，讓接受治療者可再度自我照顧，例如進食、個人衛生、穿衣、如廁、沐浴等，並且能如常參與社區、工作、學習、休閒等；所以，為病者安排適當的生活環境設備、家務管理，還有身心健康輔導，都是職業治療師的工作之一。
香港一向缺專業醫療人才，職業治療師人手更是奇缺，數據指，本地註冊職業治療師與病人人數比例，平均約1: 3800，與其他國家比較，如澳洲，約1: 2000，相距頗大，所以職業治療學畢業生非常吃香，起薪點接近3萬 (Master Pay Scale 14)

The core subject of occupational therapy is introduced in OT Theory and Process I.
Year Two of the programme includes Foundation Subjects in occupational therapy such as Pharmacology in Rehabilitation, Rehabilitation Psychology, Clinical Sciences and Traditional Chinese Medicine. The core occupational therapy discipline is introduced in subjects such as Human Occupations and OT Foundations in Human Performance and Enabling Occupation in Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation.
Year Three of the programme emphasises core occupational therapy disciplines: Psychosocial Practice, Medical & Neurorehabilitation, Developmental Conditions, Environmental Issues and Assistive Technology.
Year Four of the programme extends to applied subjects such as Aging and Geriatric Practice and Vocational Rehabilitation. There is also a capstone project and a service-learning subject in the final year.

(e) 目 前 具 備 某 職 業 治 療 師 監 管 機 構 的 註 冊 身 分 ， 並 於 有 關 司 法 管 轄 區 持 有 執 業 權 [ 註 3]；
(f) 已 提 交 證 明 文 件 ， 證 明 在 取 得 可 獲 接 受 註 冊 的 資 格 後 ， 已 取 得 與 職 業 治 療 直 接 相 關 的 適 當 經 驗 [ 註 4]； 以 及

To practise as an occupational therapist, you must be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). To register with the HCPC, you first need to successfully complete approved degree-level training in occupational therapy.
‘Occupational therapist’ is a legally protected title which may only be used by registered occupational therapists. In order to get registered, applicants must fulfil the HCPC criteria which includes professional indemnity insurance and CPD requirements. Membership of RCOT provides this insurance as part of the RCOT membership benefits.

Becoming an occupational therapist
Occupational therapists are a regulated health profession and, as such, must meet the registration requirements of a provincial regulatory organization in Canada. Occupational therapists are university educated and complete a minimum of 1000 hours of supervised fieldwork experience (on-the-job training). The accreditation standards set by the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists (CAOT) accepts the master’s degree in occupational therapy as the minimal educational requirement for entry-level education in Canada. In choosing among different occupational therapy education programs CAOT recommends that you contact the individual university for admission requirements, course descriptions and curriculum.
Applicants to every province other than Quebec must successfully complete the National Occupational Therapy Certification Exam (NOTCE), as a requirement of registration. In the Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut, occupational therapists are not currently a regulated health profession and, as such, do not need to complete the NOTCE to practice in the Territories.

The Occupational Therapy Board of Australia (the Board) is responsible for the regulation of occupational therapists. The Board has assigned the Occupational Therapy of Australia Ltd (OTC) to exercise the accreditation functions under the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law, as in force in each state and territory (the National Law). The OTC is the accreditation authority responsible for accrediting education providers and programs of study for the occupational therapy profession.

Overseas qualified practitioners
To work as an occupational therapist in Australia, you need to apply for and be registered with the Occupational Therapy Board of Australia. You may also need to apply for a visa issued by the Australian Department of Immigration and Border Protection (Australian Immigration Department).
These two application processes are entirely separate and success in one does not automatically guarantee success in the other.

Internationally-qualified occupational therapists wanting to practise in Australia are currently required to undertake an initial assessment in compliance with the requirements specified by the Occupational Therapy Council (OTC). This assessment comprises:
- Stage 1 – desktop audit
- Stage 2 – Supervised practice audit
These initial assessment processes will then qualify internationally-trained practitioners for registration by the Occupational Therapy Board of Australia via the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

Training to become an occupational therapist usually takes three years. You need to complete the Bachelor of Health Science in Occupational Therapy (AUT University – Auckland), or the Bachelor of Occupational Therapy (Otago Polytechnic – Dunedin or Hamilton).
Once you have graduated, you need to be registered with the Occupational Therapy Board of New Zealand Te Poari Whakaora Ngangahau Aotearoa, and have an annual practising certificate.
